What's an Extradisambiguator?
Extradisambiguator: Noun. One who extradisambiguates.
Seriously, the word arose as a result of a mistake I made at work.
I work on the technical support desk for a computer software company (please, no
technical support jokes - I've heard them all!) and I was once closing a call for
a certain customer. The customers are able to see what I have written in the call's
closure notes, and this contact was whiling away a boring train journey home one
evening reading call closure notes.
The call concerned four programs, two of which had been renamed to avoid confusion
with the other two because of where they would be used. Thus the two programs
pymt and addpymt belong together, and pymth and addpymth belong together - the 'h'
at the end of the program names tell the customer this.
So, my call closure note ran along the lines of advising this fact, but unfortunately
I made a mistake and ended up confusing the issue further rather than clearing up the
confusion with a sentence such as this:
Some programs have been renamed to disambiguate where they should be used.
Programs pymt and addpymth belong to Rents whereas pymth and addpymt belong to
House Purchase.
The customer e-mailed me suggesting I had made a mistake and could I please
extradisambiguate him. So, it's a customer contact you have to blame for this
word! Needless to say, the above should have read:
Some programs have been renamed to disambiguate where they should be used.
Programs pymt and addpymt belong to Rents whereas pymth and addpymth belong to
House Purchase.
So, as they say, now you know!!
